Description

The Forest Park we know today is an ecologically diverse forest that stretches as far as the eye can see. It might come as a surprise to some that nearly all of Forest Park was logged between 1850 and 1948, the year the park was established.

Historian Tanya Lyn March Phd will guide a moderate hike focusing on the European settlers who intentionally reshaped the land for profit. From a land claim owner who killed his daughter's sweetheart to a turn-of-the-century tale of greed where Lafe Pence blasted the hillside above Balch Creek down into the lake at the Lewis and Clark Fairgrounds. The walk will visit the physical remains of the projects to discuss who died along the way, why men failed to achieve their dreams, and how these quasi-nightmares changed the shape of Portland.

Where: Lower Macleay Trailhead. Parking is limited, so please give yourself extra time when arriving!

When: Friday, August 19th, 9:30 am - 11:30 am.
