Description

Curious about where mushrooms grow and why? Join us for this fascinating early-season class focused on the hidden world of fungi and the environments that support their growth. During this June hike, you’ll learn how to recognize the conditions fungi need to thrive—such as moisture, soil type, tree associations, and decaying wood—and how to spot the best habitats for different species.

We will meet at Germantown & Leif Erikson Trailhead

This class is designed to prepare you for our Mushroom Identification Hike on November 6, 2026, when fungal activity is at its peak. While these classes are part of a learning sequence, you do not need to attend both. However, taking both classes will give you a deeper understanding of fungal life cycles and seasonal changes. If you take this class, you will also be guaranteed a spot in the November 6th Mushroom Identification class, if you’d like to join the November session.

Please note: mushroom collecting is not allowed in Forest Park, but you will gain the knowledge and skills needed to confidently identify fungi and prepare for safe foraging outside the park in November.

Did you know that you can ride a free shuttle to Forest Park this summer? On Fridays and Saturdays between June 12-August 22, 2026, ride a free shuttle to the Leif Erikson Drive Trailhead at Germantown from different locations across Portland. Visit www.portlandoregon.gov/parks/park-shuttle to see the stops and schedule. We hope to see you on board this summer!
