Note: while the three workshops in this series have an interconnected theme and do build on each other, it is not necessary to take all three, or take any one workshop as a prerequisite for another. Participants are asked to bring a camera they are familiar with and can use during the workshop. An SLR-type camera is recommended, with settings for manual exposure. To get the most out of the workshop, participants should be able to download photos taken during the event to a MacBook Pro, to be shared with the group.
Workshop 1. Saturday, May 25, 9-noon. Telling Stories with the camera: the basics. Just like a novel, good photographs tell stories, but instead of words, they use visual analogs to provide a genre, setting, characters, relationships and plot. This workshop will explore ways to get a camera to “speak” the language of story, by utilizing simple concepts like exposure, focus, composition and color. Participants will spend time shooting their own examples along Balch Creek in Forest Park, and share the results for class discussion. Location: Lower McLeay
